新素材 警营“托儿所” On 2 February, a fruit market in northern Chi- na was busy as trucks with fruit came in,sellers called out prices and customers negotiated(协商)the best deals. But there was a very different scene in a small police station at the end of the market. Inside,a group of children aged from 4 to 13 stayed for the day. They were there because their parents were too busy to look after them.
Understanding the difficulties these hard- working families faced,local police officers at a fruit market in Tangshan turned their station into a day care centre. They offered a "baby storage" service — a safe place to "deposit(寄存)" their children.
Officer Zhang Caijie first noticed the need for such a place. "One winter day,I saw a lit- tle girl sitting in a chair next to a fruit shop, trying to do her homework," he said. "Her fingers were cracked(有裂纹的)from the cold. It broke my heart."
Zhang and other officers went to the market's management and made a plan. They cleared out a section of the police station, pre- pared desks and chairs,and brought in books,
toys and snacks. Volunteers joined in,turning the small room into a centre of activity.
