【读故事,知典故】
Every shot hits the target
During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a good archer(弓箭手)in Chu named Yang Youji. He served in the army of King Gong of Chu.
During a war with Jin’s army, a general(将军)of Jin shot King Gong of Chu in the eye. King Gong of Chu felt very angry and humiliated(耻辱的). He gave two arrows(箭)to Yang and ordered, “Shoot and kill that general!”
Without a word, Yang took the arrows and left. After a while, he returned with an unused arrow and handed it back to King Gong of Chu. It turned out that Yang had killed the general with just one arrow.
At the time, there was another famous archer in Chu named Pan Dang. He was proud of himself because he had never missed the bullseye(靶心)in any competition. Yang said to him, “If you can’t hit a willow(柳树)leaf from a hundred steps, you can’t call yourself a good archer.”
Pan asked Yang to prove that he could do it himself. Pan chose three leaves from a willow tree. He then drew numbers on them and asked Yang to choose one to shoot. Yang, however, let go of three arrows. They shot the three leaves in the order of the numbers. At this point, Pan was finally convinced of Yang’s skill.
