In the UK,it's thought that around 21 million people are allergic(过敏) to something and more than 5% of children have a food allergy. What are allergies and why do people get them? Allergy Awareness Week (22—28 April) is a chance to find out more and help people who have them.
An allergy is when your body reacts to something, wrongly thinking it is dangerous. "Allergies happen when the body's immune system(免疫系统),which protects us from illnesses, mistakes something harmless like pollen(花粉)or pets for a danger," explains Holly Shaw,a nurse. People can be allergic to all kinds of things:animal fur, dust, feathers, plants,or foods like nuts or dairy products.
Allergic reactions can be different for everyone. A weak reaction could include sneezing, sore eyes or a rash(疹子). A more serious allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis(过敏反应). People find it hard to breathe or they breathe fast;they might have trouble swallowing or they might cough. There are safety steps and medicines that people with allergies can take.
"Kids might need to avoid certain foods or places with lots of pollen, and sometimes carry medicine," Shaw says. For mild reactions, medicine or creams can reduce itching and sneezing. Those at risk of serious reactions often carry an adrenaline autoinjector(肾上腺素自动注射器). If someone has a serious reaction, they need immediate help. Tell an adult right away.
Scientists don't know exactly why people are allergic to different things. Allergies are common in children but people can get them at any age,and they sometimes run in families too. A doctor can help to organize tests to find out if you have one. Although living with allergies can be challenging or even scary,it shouldn't hold anyone back from enjoying life fully.
