Singapore is a small country located in South - East Asia. The place belonged to several different kingdoms in history until a man called Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles came to the island in 1819. He encouraged business and financial investment in Singapore, and it gradually became a wealthy country today. It is known as the Lion City.
Singapore is famous for its lively shopping and restaurant culture. Orchard Road is the central shopping and restaurant district in the capital city, where you can buy a variety of jewellery, fashionable clothes and electronic goods.
Apart from busy city life, there are many chances in Singapore to explore the natural world. Singapore Zoo has over 300 species of animals from all over the world. It is a unique zoo because it keeps its animals in large enclosures (围栏) separated from the public by small streams rather than in cages. We can find many rare species at the zoo including the endangered white rhino and white tiger.
There are some smaller islands in Singapore, including Pulau Ubin and St John’s Island. The most famous of these islands is Sentosa Island, which has many sandy beaches where you can do many kinds of water sports, such as jet skiing and diving. You can visit the Underwater World Amusement Park, where many sharks and tropical fish can be found.
