Welcome to China, a nation that about one fifth of the world's population call home! China is also one of the world's oldest civilizations (文明). And there are also lots of places of interest in the country.
The Great Wall
The Chinese began working on this long wall more than 2,000 years ago. It was built to stop the enemies from coming in. The Great Wall is the longest man - made structure (建筑) in the world. It has forts (堡垒) and towers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Considered one of China's most well - known places of interest, the Great Wall is visited by millions of people a year.
The Forbidden City
The Forbidden City sits exactly in the centre of the ancient city of Beijing. It took 14 years to complete its construction (建造). For about 500 years, it served as the home of 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. A high wall is around it. Today, the Forbidden City, officially known as the Palace Museum, is the world's largest and most complete existing ancient wooden structure architectural complex. Since 1925, it has been officially open to the public.
