I didn’t like to help others before. I would get nervous when someone asked me for help. Things changed when I was in Grade Seven.
It was a cloudy morning. I was walking to school when I met a tall man. Carrying a long thin walking stick and wearing sunglasses, he stood at the crossing. I found this a little strange as it was early in the morning but he was wearing sunglasses. However, I crossed the road without thinking too much about it.
When I reached the other side, suddenly I heard cars and buses sounding their horns(喇叭). I turned around and saw the man was in the middle of the road. It seemed that he was too scared to move. Just then, I knew the man wasn’t able to see. So I ran back and helped him cross the road. The man said with a smile, “Thank you very much for your kind help.”
It made me feel good to hear that. In fact, I felt so good that I asked him where he was going and if he needed more help. He told me he was going to the market not far from my school. I walked the man to the market and then left for my school.
From then on, I often help people in need. Now I volunteer to help out at an old people’s home every Sunday. Helping others really matters in my life. Being helpful makes me happy and I no longer find it nonsense.
