Ⅲ. 阅读理解
When I was young, I was small but dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the school team but didn't make it.
As I grew older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try running. I told Grandpa, "I'm going to be an athlete."
"Dave," Grandpa said, "if you can't be big, you can do something big."
I ran 12 miles that day, and added a mile each year until I was 17.
All that running inspired(激起) another big dream in me: to run the marathon. I told Grandpa about my decision.
"But you haven't trained for a marathon. Are you sure you're ready?" he asked, but still promised to cheer me on.
I ran fast that day. But I fell at Mile 18 and was taken to the hospital. I called Grandpa and said, "I failed."
"No," he said calmly, "you didn't fail. You discovered big dreams take work. Train hard, and I'll wait for you next year."
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months later, Grandpa died. He wouldn't be there for my second marathon, so I decided to run it for him.
On the race day, his words pushed me through each painful step. Crossing the finish line, I threw my arms up and cried, "Grandpa, we made it!"
