The Oxford Children's Word of the Year for 2024 has been revealed as "kindness". Children also voted for "slay" to be the top slang word of the year.
What is Word of the Year all about?

The Children's Word of the Year is announced by Oxford University Press (OUP), which publishes dictionaries and reference books. It highlights a word that reflects children's experiences over the year. A total of 6,280 children, aged 6 to 14, took part in surveys to choose 2024's Word of the Year. The research began with teachers asking children which words they thought were important. Using these, a shortlist of three words or phrases was created: "kindness" "artificial intelligence" and "conflict". Children were asked to choose a word of the year from them. OUP also looked at stories entered into the BBC 500 Words 2024 story competition to see how children used the top words.
Why is "kindness" the top word?
"Kindness" was chosen by 61% of children. Lots of them said this was because they thought it was important to be kind. One child said, "If more people show kindness, the world will be a better place." Another said, "It is one of my school values and it is our family word." When children were asked how the word made them feel, common responses were "happy" "good" and "hopeful".
OUP's Andrea Quincey said it was "so encouraging" that "kindness" had been chosen. She added, "Young people are also very aware of the valuable role which language can play in bringing people together."
Which slang words were popular?
The three most popular slang words were "slay" "sigma" and "skibidi". "Slay", which was the top choice, was also on the slang shortlist in 2023. Children said they often used it when someone had done something good. Children said they used "sigma" and "skibidi" in lots of different ways, even if they didn't properly mean something. One child said "skibidi" was used "randomly to each other in the playground because it's funny".
