When we talk, we often move our hands as a way of expressing (表达) what we want to say. This is called gesturing (做手势). People from different cultures all use gestures, but they use them differently. For example, Italians and Swedes use different kinds of gestures when they tell a story. And Italians gesture more than Swedes do.
Two researchers in Sweden did an interesting study. They asked 12 Italians and 12 Swedes to tell the story of a cartoon (卡通片). They chose a cartoon named *Pingu* because the characters (人物) in the cartoon don't speak. The 24 people had to speak in their own words and make gestures to tell the story.
The researchers found that Italians used 22 gestures for every 100 words they said. Swedes used only 11 gestures for every 100 words. This showed that Italians gesture more often.
But it wasn't just how much they gestured. Italians and Swedes used different kinds of gestures. Italians used more gestures to explain and add new parts to the story. Swedes used more gestures to show the actions happening in the story. That's to say, Italians and Swedes tell stories in different ways.
Why did the researchers do the study? They hope it will help people see that gestures are important in all cultures. We can use gestures to help us express ourselves better.
1. How many people did the researchers ask to tell the story of a cartoon? (不超过 5 个词)
2. What did Swedes use more gestures to do when telling the story? (不超过 10 个词)
3. Why did the researchers do the study? (不超过 15 个词)
