三、阅读理解
阅读短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出一个与短文内容相符的最佳选项。
Winter sports didn't have a separate Olympic event at first. As early as 1908, figure skating—including single and pair competitions—was added to the London Summer Olympics, marking the first appearance of winter sports in the Olympic Games. Later, ice hockey joined the 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympics, drawing teams from 7 countries and gaining wide attention.
In 1921, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) put forward a plan to hold an independent winter sports event. However, this idea faced strong protests from Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden, and Finland. These nations had hosted the Nordic Games since 1901, a major winter sports festival in Europe, and they worried that a new IOC event would take audiences and athletes away from their traditional games. After months of discussions, an agreement was finally reached: instead of an official “Olympics”, the IOC would organize an “International Winter Sports Week” in 1924.
The 1924 event in Chamonix, France, turned out to be a great success. It included 14 events across 6 sports, from skiing to bobsleigh. Norway dominated the medal table with 17 medals (4 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze), while other Nordic countries like Sweden and Finland also performed excellently. Together, the Nordic nations won 30 out of the total 49 medals. Seeing that the event didn't harm the Nordic Games but instead promoted winter sports globally, the Scandinavian countries gave up their objections. The IOC was so satisfied with the event's success that it officially recognized it as the first Winter Olympics later.
The 1928 event in St. Moritz, Switzerland, became the second official Winter Olympics. Over the years, more sports like snowboarding and freestyle skiing have been added, and the number of participating countries has grown from 16 in 1924 to over 90 today. The Winter Olympics have grown into a world-famous sports festival loved by people all over the world.
