Li Kui, Lin Chong, Song Jiang... These are popular roles from the novel Outlaws of the Marsh (《水浒传》). Every Spring Festival, they "come out" of the novel and dance in the street. This is Yingge dance.
Yingge dance is a traditional Chinese folk dance in Guangdong. It is a mix of dance, opera and kung fu. It gets ideas from Outlaws of the Marsh and tells stories of good people fighting with bad people, so people also call it the dance of warriors.
Dancers wear opera-style make-up(妆造) and hold short sticks in their hands. While walking and dancing, they hit the sticks together. With the fast beating drums and the dancers' cool moves, the dance rocks the streets and makes people feel powerful.
In Guangdong, young and old, men and women all like the dance. Female Yingge dance started later than the male dance. It mostly gets ideas from the stories of Mu Guiying and Hua Mulan.
Zheng Zixin, an 8th grader, is a member of a female Yingge dance team in Shantou. She became popular online when dancing during the Spring Festival. "Yingge dance is really cool. When we practise, we have to do the same moves again and again. Sometimes we are so tired that our legs hurt. But every time we perform and see people's happy faces, we feel proud. We will keep practising hard and show everyone the best of Yingge dance," she said.
