The Amazon River is about 6,440 km long. It is commonly thought as the world's second longest river. During the rainy season, it can be as much as 20 miles wide in some areas. It is also one of the deepest rivers, reaching 300 feet deep in a number of areas. It begins from the Andes Mountains and runs eastward to the Atlantic Ocean. The river is important because it runs through the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon rainforest is home to some of the planet's most amazing and unusual birds, fish, and insects. It has the most plant and animal species in the world. Brightly coloured birds, monkeys, and frogs live there. In the water, you'll find pink dolphins. Some of the plants and trees there have been used as medicines for thousands of years. The river became known as the Amazon during the mid-1500s. A Spanish person saw some women fighting along its lower banks and named the river after them. In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a group of women who were very good at fighting.
