Zhangye Geopark is a wonderful place with amazing rainbow hills. The hills look like waves and have many different colours, just like a rainbow.
These colourful hills were formed over millions of years ago. Long ago, this area was under a lake. Rivers brought in sand and stones with different metal elements. These formed layers at the bottom of the lake. As the climate changed, the lake dried up. Then, the underground land moved and pushed against each other. The layers of sandstone were lifted up. After years of wind, sun and rain, the rainbow hills we see today were formed.
