Long ago, there was a woodcutter (伐木工). One day, when he was cutting wood by a lake, he lost his axe in the water. The water was so deep (深的) that he could not get his axe back. He had only one axe, and he needed it to make his living. He sat down and started to cry. As he cried, a spirit came out. She asked, "What was wrong with you, woodcutter?" The man told her what happened. The spirit listened to the woodcutter and felt sorry for him. But what could she do to help? She then thought of a great idea. She jumped into the lake and brought back a gold axe.
