As a software developer, I build things with code*. Most
people think my job is all about computers. I thought so at
first, but a visit to my friend Sami changed my idea on my job.
Sami's grandfather moved to our country. He felt very
lonely at home because he couldn't speak English. Sami said, "I wish I could help
him learn simple words."
"We can build an app for that!" I said, feeling excited.
I spent several weeks creating a simple app. It was not easy to make it.
Sometimes, the sound wouldn't play. Other times, the pictures wouldn't be seen.
I had to find and fix these problems one by one. Finally, the app was ready. It
showed pictures of everyday things. When I tapped* one, it would say the word in
both English and Grandpa's language.
The best moment came when we showed the app to him. He tapped the
picture of a bus. He heard the word. Then, his face lit up with the biggest smile
I had ever seen. He started using it from then on.
At that time, I realised the meaning of my job. I used my skills not to make
a game, but to build a bridge for Grandpa. I helped him feel less lonely. My job
isn't just about writing code. It's about solving people's problems. That is the
real magic of what I do.
