(B)
Florence Nightingale was born into a rich family in 1820. When she was a child, she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them. Florence had a dream to become a nurse and when her father refused to allow her to train as a nurse, she was so upset that she became very ill. Eventually, her father relented (终于答应) and Florence started on her journey. She went to study nursing in Germany and France and even travelled to Egypt to have formal training. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women.
During the Crimean War (克里米亚战争) in 1854, she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was terrible. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen. But the brave nurses went to work. Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and food for the men. Her only pay was in smiles from the lips of the dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman. At night, she would carry a lamp as she went round the hospital to check on her patients and the soldiers started to call her “the lady with the lamp”.
After she returned to England, she was praised for her work by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home and Training School for Nurses in London. She also wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries.
Florence Nightingale served others through her work as a nurse all her life. She died on August 13, 1910. (280 words)
