More than 20 students in the third grade from the Affiliated Primary School of Hunan Normal University took the class. Twelve language professors at universities such as Hunan Normal University, Central South University, and Changsha Normal University took part in teaching the class. Students not only learned about listening, speaking, reading, and writing but also the idioms, nursery rhymes, figures of speech, and culture behind the dialect, according to Luo Xinru, one of the teachers of the class.
“As the country has spent a lot promoting(推动) standard Mandarin(普通话), lots of young children have not learned how to speak local dialects,” she said. “That's why the country has started to protect different language resources(资源) in recent years.”
The Ministry of Education started the National Language Resource Protection Project in 2015 to do surveys and protect its language resources better. The country has built the largest language resource database in the world, according to the ministry.
Luo said promoting the use of Mandarin and dialects is not contradictory and children have the ability to speak them well at the same time. “Dialect protection is the future trend(趋势) and different dialects which carry different kinds of culture should not and will not disappear,” she said. “We do not expect all children taking the class to learn Changsha dialect quite well, but they should know the importance of different dialects and perhaps be willing to work for the research and protection of them as they grow older.”
