The Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. People celebrate it on the 8th day of the 12th lunar month.
On that day, people usually eat a bowl of hot Laba Porridge. The porridge is also called “Eight-Treasure Porridge” because it has at least eight different things in it. People often put rice, beans, dried fruits and peanuts in the porridge.
On the night before the festival, mothers are busy. They prepare the porridge for the family. They start to cook it at midnight and cook it slowly until the next morning. In the morning, when children wake up, they smell the nice food. Then they run to the kitchen to eat breakfast.
Another custom is to make Laba vinegar（醋）for dumplings on New Year’s Eve. People put garlic in a jar with vinegar. After some days, it turns green and tastes special. Some people also like to pickle（腌制）meat at the Laba Festival.
A long time ago, the Laba Festival was a time for the ancient Chinese to pray for a good harvest and good luck for the new year. After the Laba Festival, people begin to get ready for the Chinese New Year.
