Su Wu Tends Sheep
Su Wu was a faithful diplomat sent by Emperor Wu of Han in 100 B. C. to Xiongnu. Chanyu, the head of Xiongnu, wanted Su Wu to work for him. Su Wu refused. Chanyu decided not to give Su Wu food or water. After a few days, Su Wu still refused to work for him. Then, Su Wu was sent to the Northern Sea to tend sheep.
When Su Wu reached the Northern Sea, he could only eat the seeds of grass. Li Ling worked for Xiongnu. Chanyu asked Li Ling to convince Su Wu. Li Ling said, “Emperor Wu of Han is dead. No one would appreciate your loyalty to Han any more.” However, Su Wu refused again.
After tending sheep for nineteen years, Su Wu could finally go back to Han. His hair became grey, but his loyalty was appreciated by the new Emperor Zhao of Han.

“苏武牧羊”出自《汉书·苏武传》。作者班固(32—92)是东汉扶风安陵(今陕西咸阳市)人,著名的史学家、文学家。他子承父业,花了20多年编成《汉书》,记叙了公元前206年(汉高祖刘邦元年)至公元23年期间229年的历史。
苏武(公元前140—公元前60),字子卿,是西汉坚贞不屈的和平使者。公元前100年,他奉汉武帝之命出使匈奴,但遭到匈奴单于的扣留。单于多方挽留无效,又将他放逐到北海(今俄罗斯贝加尔湖)边牧羊。公元前81年,匈奴与汉再次和好,苏武才得以回汉。
