四、阅读理解
In the Chinese lunar calendar, there are twelve animal signs and they appear in a fixed order. Each oft hem represents a lunar year. There are many stories about animal signs. Among them the most popular one is the Great Race.
Long long ago, people always forgot in which lunar year they were born. In order to help people remember the year, Yudi, Ruler of the Heaven, came up with an idea. He organized a river-crossing race among animals and announced that he would choose 12 animals to represent the different lunar years, according to the order they arrived at the finish line.
The animals were very excited about the race, especially the Rat. He was so eager to win, but he couldn’t swim. So he asked the kind-hearted Ox for help and the Ox agreed to take the Rat across the river on his back.
After the race began, the Ox took the lead. But as he was about to reach the opposite bank, the Rat jumped off the Ox’s head quickly and got first place. The Ox came second, with the Tiger right behind him. So ever since then, the Ox always stared at the Rat angrily.
The Rabbit couldn’t depend on himself to cross the river, either. So he jumped onto the backs of the other animals. And he came fourth.
The Dragon could have flown directly across the river, but he was delayed because he held a rainmaking ceremony in the East China Sea. So he only came fifth. The Horse first followed the Dragon. But just as he was rushing towards the finish line at full speed, the Snake shot through to come sixth.
The Sheep, the Monkey, and the Rooster worked together to row a log (圆木) across the river. At last, they won themselves eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively.
Next came the Dog. Though he was a great swimmer, he played in the water for so long that he forgot the race. He only managed to come eleventh. The final place was given to the Pig, who was so lazy and easily got hungry that he stopped to eat food and have a sleep halfway.
