On December 26, 2025, China opened the world’s longest expressway tunnel to the public—the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel. With a length of 22.13 kilometers, this amazing project has greatly changed travel between north and south Xinjiang. The new tunnel is an important transport link that connects the two sides of the mountains.
Before the tunnel opened, there was no direct highway through the mountains. The only roads were dangerous and winding. In winter, the roads were often covered with snow and ice. The trip took several hours. Sometimes people had to wait for days for the roads to open. Now, thanks to the new tunnel, the same trip takes only 20 minutes. It is very convenient for both people and goods.
The Tianshan Mountains run through central Xinjiang, dividing the region into two parts. For many years, crossing these mountains was very hard. Drivers had to drive carefully on high, narrow roads. The weather was often bad, and the roads were dangerous.
Building such a long tunnel was not easy. Workers used high-tech machines and methods. They worked at 3,000 meters above sea level, where winter temperatures dropped to -42℃. The area also has frequent earthquakes. However, with strong government support, Chinese engineers and workers faced all these challenges bravely. They finished the project in just five years.
Now, local people benefit a lot from the new tunnel. A truck driver said, “I am very happy with the new tunnel. It helps bring out our goods to other cities much faster.” People and goods can now move between north and south Xinjiang more safely and quickly. The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is not just a great engineering success—it is also a new bridge connecting people.
