During the Spring and Autumn period(春秋时期), a man named Ning Ying(宁瀛) ran an inn(客栈) in Wei. One day, Yang Chufu, a senior(高级) official(官员) of Jin, visited Wei. He stayed in Ning's inn. Ning admired this guest very much. He decided to follow Yang and work under him.
When Yang was ready to return to Jin, Ning asked to go with him. Yang gladly agreed. He chatted with his new follower along the way. However, Ning found that Yang's long talk was actually quite hollow(空洞的). So, he changed his mind and left Yang.
When Ning returned home, his wife was puzzled. “Didn’t you want to follow that official to Jin?” she asked him. “Why did you come back halfway?”
“I was deceived(欺骗) by his good appearance and thought he was a wise leader,” Ning replied. “Throughout our journey, he kept using big and empty words. I finally realized that he had no real talent(才能) at all.” The man added, “Yang is like a beautiful flower that can’t bear fruit(结出果实). If I continued to follow him, I would not get good results myself, so I just came back.”
