Have you ever tried saying tongue twisters(绕口令)? They're difficult to say, but they can help with your pronunciation. One of the most famous tongue twisters is "Peter Piper". See if you can say it:
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled(腌制的) peppers;
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked;
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
Interestingly, Peter Piper was a real person. Peter was a French horticulturalist who was good at growing flowers, fruit, and vegetables, etc. He was born in 1719. At the time, peppers were extremely valuable. The Dutch controlled the trade, bringing peppers to Europe. Peter wanted to grow his own peppers, so he pickled the pepper seeds to transport them from their native islands to new locations for cultivation.
Another really famous tongue twister goes like this:
She sells seashells on the seashore.
The shells she sells are seashells, I'm sure.
So if she sells seashells on the seashore,
Then, I'm sure she sells seashore shells.
This tongue twister is also based on the life of another real person, Mary Anning (1799-1847). As a child, Mary and her father dug up shells and small fossils(化石) from thecliffs near her hometown. One day, Mary (who was 12 at the time) discovered the skeleton(骨骼) of an animal. At first, she thought it was a crocodile(鳄鱼), but it turned out to be a dinosaur(恐龙). She went on to make many other important finds, and finally became a pioneering palaeontologist(古生物学家) and fossil collector. In 2010, the Royal Society included Anning in a list of the 10 British women who have influenced the history of science the most.
