Over the past several years, scientists have had a lot of groundbreaking research about how animals sleep. One surprising discovery is that chinstrap penguins(帽带企鹅) take up to 10,000 little naps a day. Another finding is that some birds are able to sleep while flying. Frigate birds(军舰鸟) nap while flying. These seabirds stay at sea for weeks. When flying over the sea, the birds usually rest half of their brain at a time, so they can stay alert(警惕的) and see where they are going.
A study finds cats spend more than half of their lives sleeping. Horses spend about six hours sleeping every day and they do it standing up! Fish also sleep every day but they have a strange habit. They don't close their eyes when they are sleeping. When ducks sleep, they keep one eye open and one of their brains awake. It helps them stay alert and watch out for dangerous animals.
So what about us? Well, most people sleep for about a third of their lives. The number of the hours you sleep, however, has to do with your age. Most newborn babies spend about 75% of their time sleeping every day! As we get older, we need less sleep. Children need about eleven hours and adults sleep for eight hours every night.
So, yes, you spend many hours a year sleeping in bed! But you're not just asleep. Your body and your mind relax during this time, but dreams are on the way after a busy day. You may have four to six dreams a night!
