Ⅴ. (2026·淮安期中)阅读表达
The Lord Rabbit, also known as Tu'er Ye(兔儿爷), has been an important part of Beijing's Mid-Autumn Festival for more than 400 years. Tu'er Ye usually wears golden clothing and holds a medicine-crushing stick(捣药棒), with a bright flag behind it. It has a white face with mountain-shaped eyebrows, a three-part mouth, and very long ears.
The Lord Rabbit comes from the story of the rabbit in the Moon Palace. Long ago, during a plague(瘟疫) in Beijing, the Moon Goddess Chang'e sent the rabbit to help. The rabbit dressed like a person and went from house to house, curing people and ending the plague. To remember this, people made statues(塑像) of Tu'er Ye and prayed(祈求) to them every Mid-Autumn Festival for health and safety.
Tu'er Ye statues come in different sizes. Some are as tall as 1 metre, while others are only 10 centimetres. The Forbidden City has a late Qing Dynasty Tu'er Ye statue made of clay, which is 31 centimetres high, 25 centimetres long, and 8 centimetres wide. This statue, dressed as an official and riding a deer, shows people's hopes for success, as "deer" which sounds like "lù" means "official salary(俸禄)" in traditional Chinese culture.
Though fewer people pray to Tu'er Ye now, it is still a symbol of good wishes. Today, people consider Tu'er Ye statues as gifts to wish for health and success.
In 2014, the art of making clay Tu'er Ye was added to the national intangible cultural heritage list. Now more and more people are trying to help to keep the story of Tu'er Ye alive.
